The Ten Commandments of Managing Personal Change

  1. You must have a vision. It’s important that you have a picture of your “ideal” future that will sustain you when you hit the bumps in the road on the way to achieving it.

  2. You don’t have to know all the details. You just have to know enough to get started. If you focus too much on the details, paralysis of analysis can result making it difficult for you to take action.

  3. Change has a price tag attached. What are you willing to give up to get what you want? Think of this as an “investment” rather than a loss. You can’t have what you want as long as you are holding on to something that you don’t.

  4. You will meet with resistance – and that’s OK. Change is threatening to those around you. Your change may result in a loss for them.

  5. Resistance is a reflection of someone’s reaction to your change and isn’t based on facts. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Don’t let their opinion define your future.

  6. Change will change your existing relationships. Some will be lost. Some will be redefined. Those that really matter will survive.

  7. You will need to build a circle of support that may include people you currently know but more than likely will be made up of new people who come into your life and aren’t threatened by the changes you want to make.

  8. You will go through an uncomfortable time of transition that takes you from where you are to where you want to be. It doesn’t last forever. It will just feel like it does.

  9. You will have moments during this time of transition when you will question your choice, may think you’re giving up more than you’re gaining, and that you must have been crazy to even begin this journey. This will pass.

  10. Keep your focus on the future you want to create. What you focus on becomes the reality. If your focus is on what you’ve left behind or fears about what might happen, you won’t have the energy to create what you want. When you feel the fear, replace it with faith that what you are doing is what you are supposed to do and everything will work out.
